A day in the life of a Special Educational Welfare Assistant in the United Kingdom
My career history
Whilst at Sixth Form College in Staffordshire, I got a job as a Sales Advisor in a department store. During my vacations from York I returned to work at the store and continued part time after graduation (2010) as I was still unsure of what I wanted to do. I started volunteering at my old high school on my days off, which led to being offered a job there in January 2013.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I would like to have further training in Special Educational Needs. I would like to continue working with disadvantaged people in the future.
My advice to students considering work
If you want a career in the voluntary or service sector and want to help people it is really important to volunteer, it really speaks volumes that you are committed to something without financial reward. Volunteer and put yourself forward for opportunities.

What I do
I work as a Special Educational Welfare Assistant in a comprehensive high school/ converter academy. I support an individual with Special Educational Needs in a low ability year 7 class. I support him in lessons across the curriculum and have responsibility for extra tuition in numeracy and literacy on a one to one basis. I also support the rest of the class alongside other members of staff. I was offered the job after volunteering at the school for one day a week over the course of a year. I was also a pupil at the school and many of the staff were encouraged to see that I had graduated from York.
Skills I use and how I developed them
The fact that I graduated from York impressed my former teachers which helped to get a position volunteering and then in employment at the school.
Extracurricular skills:
Volunteering with York Students in Schools gave me the first experience I needed to consider working in a school.
What I like most
I love being able to help disadvantaged children, especially when they tell me that they've enjoyed a lesson and remember what they've learned. It can be very rewarding.
What I like least
Sometimes the work is difficult and it can be hard to switch off from thinking about the pupils who have problems at home.
What would I change? Nothing for the moment, I am very happy in my job.
