A day in the life of a Reporter in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
Post Graduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I would like to work as a journalist in the United States.
My advice to students considering work
Get lots of work experience, take advice from people in the profession, do plenty of extra-curricular activities including working for a student newspaper or radio station.
Look into doing a post-grad diploma at Cardiff, City or UCLAN - it's not like an undergraduate degree, you get practical training and essential experience. Get involved in student media, be flexible about what type of journalist you want to be.
My advice about working in my industry

What I do
I began at ITV Central in Birmingham as a Newsroom Journalist in July 2011, producing breakfast, lunch and evening news bulletins, working as an assistant producer and reporting occasionally. I then moved to Manchester in March 2012 to work for ITV Granada as a sports reporter on their flagship 6pm programme Granada Reports. I produce news reports, report live on location and present in studio. In December 2012 I was offered the post of Politics Reporter based in the North West but with some time spent in Westminster. I am the only politics reporter at Granada, managing my own time as well as working on our monthly politics debate show Party People. I still report on sport when needed.
Skills I use and how I developed them
The qualification carried a lot of weight, a degree from York looked very good on my CV and showed the first guy who have me a job at ITV that I was capable. I am now a politics reporter so elements of my degree have been of use.
Degree skills:
Writing essays helped me in writing scripts for news reports. It taught me to be clear and make my point. Seminars force you to listen and consider a wide range of thoughts, this is extremely important in my job.
Extracurricular skills:
Working for YSTV, URY and York Vision helped develop many skills needed for journalism.
What I like most
Everyday is different, I am constantly challenged, I get to be creative and meet some amazing people. I get to travel, work with some extremely talented people and learn from them. Live reporting is exhilarating, it is terrifying but extremely rewarding.
What I like least
The pace of working in news is great but can sometimes mean you don't work on a project for a long time, the daily churn can sometimes mean what you're doing is less rewarding.
