A day in the life of a Business Analyst in the United Kingdom
My career history
After completing the graduate training programme, I worked in our Highstreet valuations team, which values potential new customers for a credit card, in order to determine who to accept, and how much to lend them.
After 18 months in this role I rotated into the Marketing Strategy team, where I have worked on optimising a range of acquisition channels (such as Aggregator websites and Direct Mail) in order to attract new customers.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to continue progressing up the chain at Capital One to manager+ level, and then see what happens from there!
My advice to students considering work
Make the most of careers events, these are a good opportunity to meet people and make a strong first impression! They are also a great chance to understand what sort of role you might be interested in.
My advice about working in my industry
Try and make the most out of careers events, they are a great chance to meet people and understand what sort of role you might be interested in.
What I do
The role of an analyst at Capital One is generally very broad. First, analysts can pull their own data from our systems and analyse this data to drive business insights and shape future strategy. Recommendations are then made to senior leaders in the business, shaping the insights gained into a presentation format that can be used to influence people. Once buy-in is gained, analysts work with teams across the business in order to get new ideas and initiatives into market.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Studying for a degree in Economics helped to shape some of the skills and thinking I use in my job today, although Capital One accept people from a variety of different backgrounds and degree subjects.
Extracurricular skills:
Interpersonal skills / building relationships with people across the business are just as important as strong analytical skills at Capital One.
What I like most
Capital One has a really good work / life balance, as it is rare you are expected to work after hours. The projects are analytically interesting, and you generally have good exposure from presenting work to senior leaders within the business.
What I like least
The nature of the positive work/life balance means that my role does occasionally lack the intensity or working to tight timelines that you might expect in a traditional invesment banking business.
