A day in the life of a Director of Community Music in the United Kingdom

My advice to students considering work
My mantra at York was 'just say yes' - I took every opportunity that came my way, from playing to teaching to volunteering, even in areas I was less confident in. I gained valuable skills (not least effective time management!) and learned an awful lot about myself too.
My advice about working in my industry
Get as much experience as possible - the YSIS scheme is excellent, or get involved with Meg!, or contact your local schools to see if you can visit. Be prepared to get involved!
What I do
This is a new and fairly unusual role which sees me coordinating Music provision across a group of schools and creating partnerships and running projects with professional musicians, orchestras, major venues and other institutions.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree class and institution - I am sure I have had more opportunities because companies and schools recognise York as a prestigious university.
The transferable skill set I started to develop at York has definitely had an impact on the progression of my career.
Extracurricular skills:
I have always regarded myself primarily as a musician and I played in every ensemble going at York and in a band, which meant I was exposed to a wide range of music and people. Being adaptable - and being confident in different settings - is so important as a teacher.
What I like most
Everyday is different! I could be having meetings in one of the partner schools, running a rehearsal with primary and/or secondary students, taking students on a trip to an iconic venue or meeting with musicians and education officers from a world famous orchestra or institution.
What I like least
I currently live too far away - but that can be changed!
