A day in the life of a Learning & Development Manager in Thailand

How studying in the UK affected my job seeking

How I searched for jobs:
I started to look for a job since I was doing my dissertation at York as I wanted to start working immediately after graduation. I searched from company official websites and job posting websites in Thailand (Jobtopgun/JobsDB). It took time to find a good job in good company. The best way is to apply to many companies and do a follow-up.

Attitudes to study in the UK:
They appreciated my experience outside Thailand. University of York is ranked as a Top 10 university in UK and graduating from York can create good impression to employers. Questions they asked are e.g. Why did you choose to study in UK? Why did you select University of York? Tell me about experience there etc.

Challenges in looking for jobs:
Graduating from UK is highly appreciated by employers in Thailand. It indeed increases your ability to find suitable positions in multinational company. Many Thai people choose to study Master's in UK at the present in order to develop English skills and find a good job in the future. The big challenge is that you have to adjust yourself to the culture and learn to become independent.

The recruitment process

I saw job post in a website and applied directly to the recruitment person. She called me for short interview via phone then made appointment for a formal discussion at the office with the HR Business Partner and HR Director. I was also interviewed by the Senior Regional L&D Director via Office Communicator.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I plan to be L&D Director or Head of L&D in 8 years.

My advice to students considering work

Pay attention to your study and find time to explore things around you. Make friends, go travelling, socialize and learn about different cultures. During your dissertation time, start to think about your first job after graduation. Don't let yourself be unemployed more than 3-4 months. Start to live and learn as an adult!

If you're interested to work in an L&D function, you can start by attending useful seminars, reading more books about self-development. This sector will become more popular in the future as companies invest more in developing employees.
