A day in the life of a Marketing and Events Coordinator in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
Leonardo da Vinci Placement Programme in Seville, Spain
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to see where the road takes me whether that be into social work or into training to be a radio broadcaster.
My advice to students considering work
Do varied and interesting things at University. Be involved in societies, chair and head up events and follow your passions. Whether you are conducting a gospel choir, writing for a campus newspaper or organising a fashion show go beyond simply your role because you will get more back if you really commit. The York Uni campus is a microcosm of the bigger job world and whatever you do there that contributes to the vibrancy of campus life will help you when you graduate.
This is a brilliant sector. The office environment is supportive, often you have a lot of independence to shape your role within the organisation and you feel like you are working all day for a good cause. It is really interesting work.
My advice about working in my industry

What I do
I organise all events for our charity, International Service, and collaborate with other organisations in York and the U.K. to do this. I also go to schools, colleges, job centres and universities in Yorkshire to recruit applicants for our ICS government-funded international volunteering programme. I create marketing materials, do a bit of graphic design, network to form new recruitment connections and write press releases for newspapers.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Public speaking - chair of Amnesty society. Student representative for AIUK.
Networking - many experiences at university taught me this.
Communication both verbal and written - my English degree.
Marketing - involvement with Amnesty society and others at university.
Event Management - involvement with Amnesty society. Student representative for AIUK.
What I like most
I like that it is varied. That I don't spend all day every day in the office and that there are always events to go to, training sessions to attend and international staff to skype or talk with in person. I like inspiring young people and going into schools to give these talks.
What I like least
Sometimes it is too fast-paced, especially right before a big event.
