A day in the life of a Research Associate in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Already worked there

My career history

Started at the company as a graduate and studied for my PhD whilst working full-time there. Previous to my current company, I worked for a food testing microbiology lab in Cornwall.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to continue to progress myself and my scientific knowledge and profile through my role and the contacts I make.

My advice to students considering work

It is worth doing some kind of work-experience as this will set you apart from other graduates. Also, be prepared to get in the door as you never know where a company might take you once you are an employee there and have proven your dedication and value to them.

It is worth doing some kind of work-experience as this will set you apart from other graduates. Also, be prepared to get in the door as you never know where a company might take you once you are an employee there and have proven your dedication and value to them.

What I do

I introduce new technologies and methodologies to the company with the goal of improving current practices in genetic toxicology and in vitro toxicology where possible for them.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Project management, data management, planning on daily/weekly/monthly/annual timeframes (all from my PhD). Scientific skills obtained from all my experience to date.

What I like most

It is very varied and the work I do is more akin to a post-doc position thus involves a more investigative approach to what I do compared to other roles within the company.
