A day in the life of a Social Worker in the United Kingdom
My career history
Jobs in social care prior to qualification. Unqualified post in mental health team before qualified post came up.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I am looking forward to completing my AMHP training in the next year. There are always opportunities to change directions or progress in ASC. I would like to become involved in service development project work in the future.
My advice to students considering work
When you go for an interview, be prepared. Think about what sort of questions they are likely to ask before you get there. Remember that in social work, they are looking for people with excellent social and communication skills and so try to concentrate on how you present in the interview.
What I do
I work in a multi disciplinary mental health team, working with older and younger adults. The work involves completing community care assessments and setting up appropriate care packages in a person centred way. The post also involves providing therapeutic mental health support to service users. In another year, I will be completing further training so that I will be a qualified AMHP.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
I use all of the skills and knowledge that I learnt in my social work training, and more. It is a steep learning curve once you start in a qualified post but newly qualified social worker are generally well supported now in there first year in practice.
What I like most
I enjoy working with a variety of other professionals such as doctors, nurses and ots. I love the variety of the work and the fact that in mental health services, our work often involves working with very complex cases which require a lot of relationship building with service users.
What I like least
The work can be stressful and quite pressurised. It helps if you have a supportive team and manager.
