A day in the life of a Deputy Divisional Director - Medicine in the United Kingdom
I was drawn to a career in healthcare management because of the vital impact that quality healthcare has on individuals and society and the challenge of leadership in complex people centred organisations.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is comprised of the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Heart Institute, the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Weston General, Dental and Eye Hospitals.
The Trust employs over 13,000 people and delivers over 100 different clinical services serving a core population of more than 500,000 people.
What do you do?
I am the lead for urgent care in the Division of Medicine which includes managing the Emergency Department and Acute Medicine.
My duties include overall operational responsibility for the safe and effective delivery of urgent care, ensuring that we meet national and local performance standards and financial targets as well as driving service improvement and providing strategic direction.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I was drawn to a career in healthcare management because of the vital impact that quality healthcare has on individuals and society and the challenge of leadership in complex people centred organisations.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I have always had a keen interest in health.
Describe your most memorable day at work
returning to an NHS senior leadership role 2 weeks before the outbreak of covid-19 in March 2020!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Balancing safety and quality in a highly financially constrained health and social care sector.

Our organisation has a strong culture of kindness and team working
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was a member of the York Jiu-Jitsu and Latin and ballroom dance clubs and I enjoyed learning new skills in sociable activities.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I would like to take advantage of opportunities to healthcare in different countries and work on digital innovations in healthcare.
