A day in the life of a Medical Student in Japan
When I visited very poor medical situation and saw many children with not enough medical support, I wanted to help them more directly than help them with office work. Thus I decided to be a medical doctor.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
After my graduate from UofY, I started to work in JICA, the Japan government agency for international cooperation. When I visited very poor medical situation and saw many children with not enough medical support, I wanted to help them more directly than help them with office work. Thus I decided to be a medical doctor.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Right now, surely I am a student in medical university, so my major in UofY and current my major is different. But as I wrote above, my goal as a medical doctor is to back to development country and help the local people. From this point pf view, I believe my career development has consistency.
Describe your most memorable day at work
When I was working in JICA, my special experience was to work in Afghanistan. Actually the situation was incredibly tough, but I did my best for development of the country and every days working with my local colleagues were precious and memorable days.
Now as a medical student, I have to study so hard. But anatomy class was very exciting. It was mystical and amazing moment to see inside body especially when I see a brain. I completed anatomy class, but I still remember the feeling of weight of it.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
As a medical student, study is everything. This is the challenging thing.
In JICA, I did not feel severe challenge in my work. But we must work and think hard in project designing phase. It requires team members all out. Tough and challenging, but exciting.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Every medical school requires study hard. No difference.
In JICA, it was very open-minded and welcomed to show opinion.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
The most sophisticated and characteristic point of my course in UofY, post-war recovery studies was, internship was a mandatory even in a one year MA period and information and knowledge the students obtain in the internship shall be connected theoretical approach and described on the MA thesis. I am fully satisfied with such well-balanced curriculum design.
What would you like to do next with your career?
After becoming a medical doctor, I focus on to get surgical skills and back to developing countries to help local people especially in conflict zone.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Do your best, and achieve some goal which set by myself. even though such achievement is only one, it is not a problem. The point is not the number of achievement, but if you can explain about it with proud of it.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything is OK.
But I quit the job to enter UofY and at least my career direction is going well with consistency. So I welcome to career design before/after go to UofY.
