A day in the life of a Conformance engineer in the United Kingdom
My career history
Campus porter (shifts covers from Halifax to Alcuin, including the central Hall),
Demonstrator in the department,
Teller at Costcutter supermarket.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Consultant with experiences covering multiple industries.
My advice to students considering work
Be ready to attend and prepare for any kind of companies/industries interview. I have learnt more from a terribly humiliating interview than any workshops/projects, and it starts a new perspective for further continuing learning. I can keep an eye on something new and keep updating my knowledge portfolio after being interviewed by some sector I am unfamiliar at all.
My advice about working in my industry
broaden the scope of skills and knowledge
What I do
My role involves the following: carrying out product tests; reporting to the team any faults on the design and suggest solutions; drafting technical documents for internal use and publications; revise the practice of R&D and carry out investigations on particular problems, some of the problem is not well defined, so the task is to define a problem, find a methodology to investigate, revise the procedure.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Analysis on experiment set up and the physics behind it.
Learn from work.
What I like most
I have plenty of free time to carry on what I am interested in.
Multi-dimensional tasks I can carry, from experiments, theoretical analysis/simulation to bureaucracy like documentation preparing for claiming CE compliance for products.
What I like least
There's not always a definitive output, like a piece of hardware designed by myself or a programme. My work is to contribute into various products and the company R&D practice. Except for the user guide, there is nothing with my name signed on it.
