A day in the life of a Policy Analyst in Canada
My advice to students considering work
Don't become too emotionally or finanically invested in a specific vision of what your future looks like, or your plans -- your plans will change. Take it in stride.
What I do
My role involves:
- preparing briefing notes with related recommendations for strategic policy development;
- supporting the identification of policies that require revision;
- conducting comprehensive research of policy governing various police services to ensure the Police is in line with nationally recognized best practices;
- supporting the coordination of business planning processes;
- identifying risks and creates corresponding mitigation strategies.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
• organizational skills
• analytic and writing skills
• communications skills
• multi-tasking and meeting changing priorities.
• meeting established deadlines
• researching and practically applying Federal, Provincial and Municipal legislation and statues
• Knowledge of policy development, research methods, and analytical techniques, required
The skills have been acquired through a combination of education, personal, and work experience.
