A day in the life of a Policy & Parliamentary Assistant in

How I found out about the job

w4mp.org.uk

The recruitment process

After filling in an application form I was invited to interview and had to complete a test.

My advice to students considering work

Internships were invaluable to securing a permanent position. I did a couple during university and plenty afterwards. They really helped me to figure out what career I wanted and gave me plenty to talk about at interview.

Work hard at tailoring your applications/ CVs to the role. Don't let "rejection" deter your ambition.

Get involved with charities you're passionate about during university, it's a lot easier to give time to a cause.
Internships in this sector are often unpaid - consider how you will fund this.

What I do

I monitor parliamentary business to see where my charity can influence the government. I liaise with our in-house policy teams to ensure that our research projects can be communicated to a political audience, both in the media and to policy-makers. I help our volunteers and members organise political campaigns and meet with their MPs and prospective parliamentary candidates.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Communication - gained from many part-time sales roles & academic writing
Organisation - developed by managing many different projects simultaneously during internships
Political awareness - education & keeping up-to-date with current affairs across the political spectrum was vital.

What I like most

I am often juggling six projects at once - the work is varied and therefore holds my interest.

What I like least

There's always administration tasks to ensure good organisation.
