A day in the life of a Second Secretary in Sweden
My career history
I joined the Civil Service shortly after graduating, and having worked at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills for four years working on smarter regulation, the EU single market and trade, I am now at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Previously I have also worked at Unilever in the Netherlands on a year long internship September 2008 - July 2009.
What I do
I am currently a Second Secretary at the British Embassy in Stockholm, Head of the Science & Innovation attaché network in the Nordic countries. I am responsible for overall leadership of the team, strategising and setting direction.
I work to increase collaboration between the UK and the Nordics on all aspects of science and innovation. We have two main roles. Firstly is policy, feeding back to the UK the latest developments on the political scene, and secondly proactive campaigns, where we actively try and link UK and Nordic Innovators.
Work extends to everything from planning a ministerial visit, to researching a specific policy area, to holding events sparking new collaborative efforts.
As a section head, I also work on the wider management of the embassy, but also for the Nordic-Baltic Region and the Europe wide science and innovation teams.
What I like most
I enjoy the variety, international nature of the role, high level involvement with Ministers, opportunity to travel...
