A day in the life of a Marketing Officer in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Although I find marketing very interesting, the company I work for has made me realise the field of educational psychology is one I want to pursue a career in. I hope to progress to do a Masters in Education and Psychology.
My advice to students considering work
I have found that any experience in your chosen field is really valuable as it illustrates determination and interest in the area, and gives you something to talk about at interviews. Having confidence in yourself and what you are saying in interview goes a long way, so lots of research and practice helps.
For Philosophy students, I have found the degree I completed beneficial in terms of the analytical and research skills I developed. I have not found it limiting to have a non-sector specific degree, in fact I have found it very useful as it has allowed me to gain a great deal of experience after my degree to establish exactly what it is I want to do.
What I do
I currently work in a firm led by Educational Psychologists, who deliver psychology services to individuals and delivers training to teachers and psychologists.
A large part of my role focuses on marketing the company's services. This includes organising the company's presence at exhibitions, responding to enquiries from teachers and other education professionals into the courses offered, entering updates onto our CRM system, organising the production and distribution of marketing materials, organising advertising through external sources and editing website content. I also have general administrative responsibilities, such as organising invoicing and taking minutes in meetings.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Interpersonal skills, analytical skills, data analysis, organisational skills.
What I like most
I really enjoy the company I work for. I find educational psychology a fascinating field.
What I like least
The workload can get heavy at times, especially when close to a large exhibition. However, everyone in the company is very understanding and will provide support where they can.
