A day in the life of a Assessment Manager in the United Kingdom
My career history
I worked as an EFL teacher in Turkey, Portugal, Brazil, New Zealand, Mexico, and Senegal. I taught General English and Business English at schools, universities and in businesses. I was a speaking examiner for Cambridge KET, PET and Young Learner exams for 7 years. I also worked in a publishers adapting coursebooks for the Turkish market. I have done teacher training.
Courses taken since graduation
CTEFLA, DELTA, MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL (ongoing)
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to progress into a managerial role dealing with stakeholders rather than the actual test content.
My advice to students considering work
My advice is that students should gain extra skills such as computer and language skills. Make sure you have some experience outside studying, such as temp work, voluntary work or workcamp experience. These all enhance your CV.
Make sure you keep up to date with current developments as things change very quickly. Also, update your qualifications as necessary in order to stay ahead of the competition.

What I do
My job can be categorised in 2 parts: proofing and organising. I'm responsible for the production of certain exam papers, which involves all stages through from commissioning to the final printed product. I liaise with external consultants and arrange and attend meetings to monitor test content. Accuracy and organisational skills are key.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
I use Outlook and Excel (a lot of spreadsheets and trackers) a lot in my daily work and I do a lot of proofreading as well as giving occasional PowerPoint presentations. I have been sent on courses for Outlook, Excel, proofreading and presentation skills. I am self-taught on PowerPoint.
What I like most
Having worked as a speaking examiner, it is interesting to see test production from the other side. I also enjoy working with external consultants, who have a wealth of expertise and knowledge that I can learn from.
What I like least
It can be stressful and frustrating at times, always with the chance of the unexpected meaning it requires a certain amount of flexibility and patience.
