A day in the life of a York Sport President in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

The recruitment process

The recruitment process was a 2 week campaign across campus and social media platforms. My proudest achievement is definitely getting voted in by the students as York Sport President after months of planning and 2 weeks of intense campaigning all around campus!

My career history

Last summer, I completed a three month internship in the Corporate-Fundraising department of an amazing charity called Rainbow Trust Children's Charity. I gained invaluable experience, working with the company’s largest corporate account, Deutsche Bank, coordinating with employees, updating databases and attending external events at their Head Office. I attended presentation skills and networking workshops, improving my confidence in public speaking and communicating with various people in the team. I also attended weekly corporate and company meetings, voicing my ideas at team feedback and discussion sessions. I worked on various tasks, such as creating a PR opportunity for the Trust’s website, supervising the induction of the new interns and organising various events. I also successfully project managed a team of interns during a Battle of the Boutiques challenge, raising the most money and awareness for the charity on the day. Rainbow Trust, unlike other employers, from day one gave me a large amount of responsibility and the chance to prove what I could do which I loved. The atmosphere of the company was extremely welcoming and friendly and I felt relaxed and at home straight away. The experience I gained from this opportunity was invaluable and I cannot thank Rainbow Trust enough for giving me such an incredible opportunity.

My advice to students considering work

GET INVOLVED! Find something you enjoy and give it a go! Extra curriculum activities are so important and look great on your CV. In particular, try and get as much experience as you can in the area of work you are most interested.

Although, I am yet to begin this position, I am so excited for the freedom and creativity it will allow me to bring to the role. It is true that you really will get as much out of this role as you put in, and I am willing and determined to put in 100%!
