A day in the life of a Junior Consultant (Graduate Scheme) in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

I was contacted through LinkedIn from their HR department.

The recruitment process

The first stage was a telephone interview.

After that, the first assessment day at their London offices. This included a report writing exercise, an interview and a presentation from some employees currently on the graduate scheme.

This was followed by a second assessment day again at their offices. This began with a test on a pseudo code - the results of which were discussed during a technical interview that followed. There were two other interviews about consulting and potential. Candidates had to give a 15 minute presentation and there was a group exercise at the end of the day.

Luckily, this all resulted in an eventual job offer! Although the process was long and fairly tough, it was still enjoyable and quite relaxed. All of the candidates even went for a pint after the final assessment day!

Courses taken since graduation

I will be studying for the professional CIMA qualification once work commences.

My advice to students considering work

My first piece of advice would be to apply for a job! I know a lot of people who have been putting off applying to any jobs until after they graduate. Even if you have to apply to a few jobs, there will be something for you. Bear in mind that a lot of the good graduate schemes close their applications in November or even earlier.

Secondly, I think getting involved in university societies is essential. Everyone applying for a job has a degree, so having something else to talk about in interviews is really important. After having run the university's radio station in my second year I was able to talk about leadership, marketing, communication and everything else that it taught me.

Finally, get a profile on LinkedIn. My graduate employer actually found me on LinkedIn and asked me to apply for the role. I had not heard of the company before and therefore wouldn't have applied. It is such an easy way to get yourself noticed and doesn't take much time to keep your profile up to date. Jobs are often also advertised on there to help further your search.
