A day in the life of a Senior Communications Executive in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Indeed.co.uk

The recruitment process

After sending off my CV, I was asked to submit a portfolio of my copywriting work. I was then invited to attend an interview, during which I talked through my portfolio, and answered questions about how my time at university prepared me for the flexible and continuous demands of the role. During the interview I was invited to return the next week for a second interview, and was given a task to complete in the meantime. I presented that task a week later, and two weeks after that was offered the role.

My career history

After my degree I did a one year MA in Medieval Studies at York, and during that time and until January 2015 I worked as a freelance writer, editor, and proofreader.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to continue proactively moving up the food chain, taking on more responsibility and getting a clearer idea of world wide messaging.

My advice to students considering work

Always make sure that you are keeping your eye out for opportunities to volunteer and work whilst you are at York. I was fortunate enough to take part in a special internship with the BBC and Ian Hislop, organised by the Careers Service, and that definitely set me up well for interviews.

Always consider experience, no matter where it has come from. I spent much of my volunteer time at York supporting Jorvik, the Yorkshire Museum, Castle Museum, and the National Trust. I haven't ended up in the heritage sector - yet! - but the skills and experience I gained there have really developed me as a person, and have made me a more attractive candidate to employers.

What I do

I manage the Communications Team, ensuring that all messaging, copy, PR, and social media is on brand and carefully tailored for the audience.

I also continue my Copywriter role: contributing copy for product descriptions, manuals, and blog entries; aiding in brainstorming sessions for products; coordinating and managing international translation; being the point of contact for our partner international PR agencies; and championing the Communications Team within the company.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Writing: developed through my two degrees at York, and own personal writing.
PR: developed through experience of my internship organised through the Careers Service
Social media: developed through my own experience as a published author
Messaging: developed through experience in the role, and learning from others
Administration: developed through volunteering in various university societies
Management: developed through working part time during university.

What I like most

I love the opportunities to work with big brands and organisations, and the fact that my work has a real impact in the way that their messaging and communication is shaped. I also enjoy working in a dynamic creative team, with people from various backgrounds, to collaborate together.
