A day in the life of a Marketing & Design Administrator in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to pursue marketing - particularly the analytical side of it - for a few more years, after which I plan to go into management. The perfect job for me in the future would of course be a management position within marketing!
My advice to students considering work
Take every opportunity that seems even slightly relevant to your prospective career and make it your own. Work hard in voluntary roles, make an impression, go the extra mile, and people will remember you. Make yourself invaluable to a company! Further, there's a lot to be said for an enthusiastic and positive attitude.
Push yourself to learn more! I had no experience in the business analytics side of marketing, but through online resources, talking to colleagues, and voluntary learning courses, I've developed skills that make me an invaluable member of the team. Simply searching the web for newsletters, resources and reports keeps you at the top of your game and ahead on upcoming trends. When you can quote the latest statistics on brand engagement on Instagram, for example, people will listen to your argument!

What I do
As Marketing & Design Administrator I'm charged with planning and implementing York Sport's marketing. During the planning process I allocate resources effectively, ensuring all of our activities are cost-effective. After committing resources, booking advertising space, and organising the annual budget I then carry out the plan, which will include regularly posting on social media, creating engaging content on our website, designing literature, writing press releases, and so much more. The crucial part of this job is what comes afterwards - analysis. Every campaign and activity must be justified in terms of ROI, so that we can make better informed decisions in the future and justify spending large amounts of money.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Analytical: I developed these through critical thinking in my philosophy course. I also learnt an awful lot from online marketing resources, and through mentorship from colleagues.
Creativity: I pursued design work outside my studies at University, working for Alcuin College, Fusion and more, which developed my creative design skills. I also developed creative thinking through my philosophy degree.
Pursuasion: My degree and A-level courses taught me a great deal about pursuasive writing and arguing.
What I like most
My favourite thing about my job is analysing all of York Sport's marketing activities. It's very rewarding when you see that a campaign or activity that you pushed for delivers. I also like finding increasingly more cost-effective marketing techniques, informed by analysis of our previous efforts.
What I like least
The thing I like least about my job, as with most jobs, is the paperwork. The financial administration of York Sport's marketing is a tricky and rather dull job, but a crucial one to maintaining healthy finances.
