A day in the life of a Author/SEO in the United Kingdom
My career history
I worked 4 internships.
One with an animator, one with a property manager handling their IT, during the summer holiday between 2nd and 3rd year. After 3rd year exams, I worked for a graphic designer in York and then took an internship with a small SEO company in York. This internship took me to where I am now.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Know everything. Rapid advancement.
My advice to students considering work
Treat job applications like a part time job.
Learn Excel.
Pick up varied skills - coding, photoshop, etc
Do work experience. In three years, you have enough summer holidays to have a years worth of experience which will make you significantly more employable than anything else. Even if you only managed 9 months, you can get another 3 months after graduation, and argue that you have a years experience.
About this sector: Read everything about digital platforms. They are constantly changing or just disappearing, so by simply being on top of the changes you have an advantage. There are hundreds of platforms, so start learning any of them.
Learn code or data analysis. They're invaluable.
My advice about working in my industry

What I do
I work in search engine optimisation, meaning I promote and ensure websites rank in search engines. My day to day work revolves around either data consultancy, as in answering client questions with lots of Excel data, researching algorithms, or managing writers. I also audit website code for technical problems and better coding, and write some digital marketing news.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Writing, data analysis, technical knowledge of advertising, search engines, coding, etc.
I thought I wanted to be a copywriter at first. But writing has fallen as a secondary skill, mostly for explaining my analysis.
Excel skills were developed as I tried to automate all the admin I had to do. Additionally I was curious as to what my coworkers were doing with data. I asked questions, constantly experimented and I am now ok at data analysis.
Technical knowledge required a basic course in coding from codecademy. The rest of technical knowledge comes from reading articles online everyday. Sometimes three or four. There is so much information, and the more you have the more you can do with it.
What I like most
Data consultancy. Once you start to understand Excel, you learn how to prove all kinds of ideas that you've had or theories. Research has a novelty to it that it academically pleasing.
What I like least
Admin. There's lots of admin when you work with data. That and managing freelance writers.
