A day in the life of a Executive Coach in the United Kingdom

My career goals when I graduated

I wanted a demanding front line job, with specialist training in aviation at sea. Achieving high rank was a distant goal but something I quietly aspired.

My career history

I eventually grew a career, but underwater. I saw many friends undertaking long flying courses and failing with little to show for it, so I opted for diving with bomb disposal! I wove my career in operations, policy and training to maximise experience and my own promotion potential.

What has helped my career to progress

Diversity as well as specialism, which can demonstrate breadth and depth.

Courses taken since graduation

A Master's degree form KCL helped to establish reach and academic acumen. I have a L7 Diploma in Strategic Leadership from CMI and this helped to solidify credentials for higher management.

How my studies have helped my career

In a practical way, I felt that Politics and Economics was vocational, and helped to give me a broad understanding of where my career might take me and how Defence needed to adapt to those disciplines.

What surprised me about my career so far

I was given an extraordinary portfolio in the Ministry of Defence, which my education and experience helped me to deal with.

My advice to students considering work

Make your CV compelling and prepare well.

My advice about working in my industry

Management consultancy may be for you - get some internships in quick!

Other advice

Check whether you are the right person for this business; know yourself first.

Contacting me

I'd be happy to Mentor anyone considering the Public Service.

What I do

Executive Coach involved predominantly with leadership development and decision-making but also with career counselling.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I have long experience of leading teams and developing individuals from my background in the Armed Forces through a variety of operational and training roles, and managing officers' careers which took them to command and promotion.

What I like most

Helping my clients to develop better ways of thinking about themselves and their work which lead to more productive behaviours and practices. `

What I like least

Endless bureaucracy and emails! I prefer conversations with real people that mean something.

What surprised me most

How coaching can change perceptions as well as behaviours in a very real way.
