A day in the life of a Tesco Online Graduate in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Targetjobs

The recruitment process

Online application; numerical, verbal, and logical reasoning tests; phone interview; assessment centre.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

My scheme finishes in October and I hope to move on to work to one of the teams working on digital development.

My advice to students considering work

Build your understanding of business in general. Think omnichannel. Read a lot - articles, features, comments. And always think about the customer.

My advice about working in my industry

Build your understanding of business in general. Think omnichannel. Read a lot - articles, features, comments. And always think about the customer.

What I do

I am on a year long rotational scheme, consisting of 4 placements in different areas of online business. I am currently in my last placement in Online Strategy team, and my previous placements include operations, marketing, and digital product. It is very fast paced and we are working in a rapidly evolving market, so there is always a lot of change. Graduates are given a lot of responsibility but also a lot of support and training opportunities.
At the moment, I am working on one major project but previously I used to have 3/4 projects at a time. I am working with teams across all Tesco online businesses, especially closely with insights team which conducts customer and market research and commercial teams.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Networking - learnt from other people at my workplace;
Communication skills - developed at university through my degree;
Problem solving - started developing at university and further improved through various projects;
Analytical skills - started at school and continued using in my degree at university;
I also had a chance to work on all these skills when doing my internship at university.

What I like most

Fast pace, responsibility, and opportunity to have a big impact on many customers. All my colleagues are great and my network is huge due to the nature of the scheme. It is challenging and motivating working here.

What I like least

Our company is very big - at times, that slows down decision making process and development.
Some parts of the company are still quite hierarchical (but I'm lucky my department is not).
