A day in the life of a Teacher in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

I was lucky enough to be employed by the school at which I trained, and so I didn't need to look for work.

How I found out about the job

Already worked there

The recruitment process

I applied for an internal teaching post while I was at the school on a placement. As part of the interview process I had to teach a literacy lesson for half an hour and then I had a formal interview with three members of the leadership team.

My career history

I previously worked as an administrator for a care home company, and as a teaching assistant at the school I now teach at.

Courses taken since graduation

PGCE

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to progress to become a subject leader and a mentor to trainee teachers.

My advice to students considering work

Be willing to start low - the graduate market is saturated but by proving yourself at a lower point you will move up quickly. It is really important to get experience before applying to do teacher training, you have to know you want it!

My advice about working in my industry

Get experience before applying to do teacher training, you have to know you want it!

What I do

Teach! Assess, monitor progress, plan, evaluate, reflect, work with parents, organise trips and events, paperwork, risk assessments, first aid, carry out interventions, discipline behaviour, playground duty...

What I like most

I enjoy seeing the children make progress and enjoy their learning

What I like least

I don't enjoy the constantly changing expectations from above.
