A day in the life of a Senior Tax Analyst in the United Kingdom
From Linguistics to International Tax Advisor...whatever next?!
My career goals when I graduated
To travel the world and enjoy life. Unfortunately, I knew I needed a job so just picked one at random.
My career history
I undertook a graduate scheme enabling me to become a qualified accountant, tax specialist and business adviser. This enabled me to become a useful addition to any corporate business.
What has helped my career to progress
Pure hard work - always put the effort in.
Also, knowing when to jump. Sometimes you have to leave places in order to progress (even if you're really happy there)- it's hard.
Courses taken since graduation
Accountancy, Tax.
How my studies have helped my career
My further studies since university have enabled me to progress in my career path as you can't really be an accountant these days without being qualified.
What surprised me about my career so far
I actually liked it- it was a pure guess based on conversations about my personal attributes and it paid off!
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Move to an asset investment/private equity house to continue advising and growing my career in a constantly developing environment.
My advice to students considering work
Do your research. Know what you want to do and why you want to do it. Don't be afraid to apply to loads of schemes/jobs. It's a hard market so you just need the one role that is right for you.
My advice about working in my industry
It does require a lot of long hours.
What I do
I assist SunGard through providing advice on international tax- ensuring that the company is effectively using the tax law and treaties to avoid any tax leakage on transactions.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Analytical- managing large data and effectively using this to reflect the status.
Negotiation- sometimes you need to argue/negotiate to ensure that an inefficient deal is not undertaken.
What I like most
It's such a large company that I never know what issue or query will land in my inbox on a daily basis.
What I like least
As with all large companies, the chains of command are very long so it takes longer than anticipated to complete tasks.
