A day in the life of a Volunteers Development Officer in the United Kingdom
My career history
Worked in the charity sector for eight years engaging people in volunteering, fundraising and generally getting involved in doing good things.
Then moved to fundraising in higher education due to relocation.
15 months away from work to look after my son full-time at the start of his life, then returned to work part-time.
My advice about working in my industry
Fundraising is a great profession and there are lots of job opportunities, even if you don't have directly relevant experience. Do some volunteering, for any organisation that you feel great about, however much (or little) time you can offer, and see where it leads.
What I do
Recruit, train and manage volunteers to fundraise, campaign and educate people about Christian Aid.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Communication, volunteer management, public speaking, administration.
I mainly learned on the job by doing them, and also took every opportunity to go on courses provided by my employer.
What I like most
Feeling like I was making a real difference to important issues; working with people (staff and volunteers) who were passionate about what they did.
