A day in the life of a Associate in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

I applyed for a Summer Internship after my second year at York. While it can seem daunting at the time, the application process is well managed and they provide you with good feedback after every stage.

How I found out about the job

_other

My career goals when I graduated

I wanted a role with an organisation which provides opportunities to test myself and which could provide a platform to gain a wide range of experience.

My advice to students considering work

Take time to research the job and industry you are interested in and learn as much as you can about the role.

My advice about working in my industry

Apply early and, if possible, speak to people who already work in the industry as they can give you advice about how to do best in the application process.

Contacting me

Feel free to contact me for information on applying for PwC, what working in accounting is like and for information about Chartered Accountancy qualifications

What I do

I work in assurance in Edinburgh, focusing on financial services and fund management clients. As an associate, you're involved in helping the audit team to understand the business of the client and carry out the year end audit.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Alongside my work I'm also studying with ICAS to become a Chartered Accountant. This involves taking a number of course in everything from Business Management and Advanced Financial Theory to Business Law and Taxation

What I like most

Working for the big 4 is a great way to get real responsibility at an early stage of your career. It provides the chance to speak and hold meetings with senior individuals at large organisations and gives you a diverse set of experiences.

What I like least

During our busy season (Jan - Mar) we sometimes have to work long hours, but there is a really good team atmosphere and it really isn't too bad!

What surprised me most

The opportunities you get to go into a global organisation and really understand their business and why they are successful have been a highlight and not something you'd normally expect at such an early stage of your career.
