A day in the life of a Director of Ethics and Compliance in the United Kingdom
My career history
Started as a research chemist.
Moved into full scale plant operations, including managing shift teams.
Followed by Financial Controller for a business.
Lastly in the Ethics and Compliance function.
Courses taken since graduation
MBA through the Open University.
Many company training courses. The most impactful were about influencing skills.
What surprised me about my career so far
That careers are a combination of chance and planning. You should be comfortable with a level of uncertainty and be on the lookout for opportunities that match your goals and skills rather than always chasing a specific job title.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Probably working for the fun of it in the voluntary sector or if the opportunity arises, setting up an E&C department in an medium sized company.
What I do
Andy McClarron is the Regional Director of Ethics and Compliance for Africa, the Middle East and Asia and is part of the BP Group Ethics and Compliance Function. Andy leads a globally diverse team of E&C professionals based in the Middle East, South Africa, China and Singapore who support the regions, businesses and functions to appropriately assess and manage ethics and compliance risks. Andy is responsible for ensuring that the region and business operations are equipped to conduct their activities in an ethical and compliant manner.
Andy has had a long career of 28 years within BP in a variety of roles, starting in 1987 in research and development, leading on to plant operations, business finance and, since 2005, in ethics & compliance.
