A day in the life of a Clinical Psychologist in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

The main approach was the use of NHS jobs and jobs.ac.uk. Those sites were very clear and was a straightforward process.

How I found out about the job

Government job website

The recruitment process

The process involved a structured interview with a panel of senior staff. The interview covered the service, treatment, management of risk and working In teams.

My career goals when I graduated

To work in a job that involved the direct use of psychology.

My career history

Programme officer in the probation service and moved to the NHS as a psychological wellbeing practitioner and then clinical training

What has helped my career to progress

A supportive mentor in senior staff, my family and working on areas that challenged me and put me outside of what I felt comfortable.

Courses taken since graduation

Doctorate in Clinical Psychology

How my studies have helped my career

My MSc gave me applied knowledge and the Clinical Doctorate gave me the skills to practice as a Clinical Psychologist.

What surprised me about my career so far

The vast areas that psychology can positively impact and the resilience of the human condition.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

In a more senior role, to be actively involved in research and more actively engaged in service design and improvement.

My advice to students considering work

Be clear about why you want the job and what you hope to learn. Show you can reflect on your experience and highlight the importance of transferable skills.

Other advice

Stick with it, seek feedback listen to it and use it develop and improve. This never stops always be open to new learning.
