My career goals when I graduated
Do something I enjoyed and used my economics!
My career history
I started as an Assistant Economist in the Department for Education. After two years I took a career break to do a sponsored MSc. On return, I was quickly temporarily promoted to Economic Adviser, and then got a permanent promotion in a move to the Department of Health. After 3.5 years there, I moved to the Food Standards Agency on level transfer. My next move was on promotion to Senior Economic Adviser in the Department for Transport (DfT) Strategy Unit. I then moved on level transfer to head up the DfT Better Regulation and Transposition Policy Unit. Following my second maternity leave, I moved to a policy post working on Crossrail 2.
What I do
Providing economic advice and analysis to support policy formation in a range of areas, including transport, food safety, social care and education.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Economic analysis skills, developed from my BA at York, a subsequent MSc at Warwick and on the job through experience and training. Policy, communication, strategy and leadership skills developed through experience and training at work.
What I like most
The variety of challenges available, within each post and through the opportunity to easily move across different departments, and the sense of working on things that really matter to people. Also, the civil service is a genuinely flexible employer e.g. I currently work 9-day fortnights (doing longer hours to take a day off every other week).
What I like least
As a large organisation, systems can be slow and cumbersome.
What surprised me most
The range of areas where economic advice is essential to government.
