A day in the life of a Assistant Lecturer in Uganda
My career goals when I graduated
Build a better team in academia, work at developing students' abilities within and outside the classroom, enhancing growth in the fields of Folklore and inter-disciplinary studies of Literature and related studies.
My career history
I started out as a high school teacher and after my MA moved into university teaching.
What has helped my career to progress
Consistent research in my field. One cannot succeed in academia without this. It is also important to build networks within and outside one's field. It helps a great deal.
How my studies have helped my career
At York, I did Postcolonial Studies as a precursor to my PhD studies. I am amazed at how I have fused these with Performance studies into the field of Folklore. York did not have Folklore studies but helped give me a leap to a new lens at how I look at Folklore and Performance Studies.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Senior Lecturer
My advice to students considering work
It is important to decide what is important between your individual interests and those of the employer. Sometimes it feels like the employer wants to smother you, you must know what you want.
It is also important to be confident. Never go looking out there as a desperate person. You have gained the skills at university to face anything in the world, so go with your head high and face that world.
