Briefly describe the organisation you work for
NHS in the South West of England
What do you do?
I am the Head of Service for a large NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies service with over 250 staff.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Following my first degrees (BA and MA, Philosophy & Politics) I worked for the NHS in an administrative role, and sought out shadowing opportunities which led me to realise I wanted to work in front-line care (Mental Health)
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Much different from when I was doing my BA/MA. By the time I had decided to train to be a nurse I knew long term I wanted to work as a CBT Therapist and likely move into clinical management.
Describe your most memorable day at work
My most memorable days so far came working as a CBT therapist and seeing people with severe, longstanding problems flourish and reclaim their lives.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Daily! Working in NHS clinical management will always be difficult with limited resources and targets to hit, but everyday I see the difference my team make to peoples lives.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Very supportive, value driven, patient centered and compassionate.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I can't say these played a huge part in my career.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Having become a Head of Service recently, I am not sure what my next step might be. This is a new post, so establishing myself for the next few years is my priority.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
You need to link your career with your values if you want to be satisfied in life. I valued job security over a high risk, high reward career, and it was vital for me to work in public service. Sit down and think about what you really really care about, be honest with yourself, and look for a career that will sit well with your values.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything, but I guess I have knowledge and experience of the NHS. Specifically: mental health care, CBT and IAPT (Improving Access To Psychological Therapies)
