A day in the life of a Software Quality Engineer in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

Talked to friends in various industries/companies + careers service advice.

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

The recruitment process

Several telephone interviews, an interview day with presentation, and a follow-up video conference.

Courses taken since graduation

PhD, Computational Physics, Cambridge.

My advice to students considering work

Follow your interests rather than the highest salary, and don't forget the impact that location can play on your quality of life!

What I do

Software Development Engineer in Test

Skills I use and how I developed them

Software development/programming in C++, MATLAB, Java. Initially exposed to programming via fourth year modules at York (and a summer placement) and continued via a PhD in computational physics (largely in FORTRAN).

What I like most

Problem solving, smart colleagues, generally relaxed work environment and benefits.

What I like least

Tight deadlines sometimes mean that a "good enough" solution to a problem has to make do - rather than the best/optimal solution that would have been more fun to implement!
