A day in the life of a Data and Information Officer in the United Kingdom

Data and Information Officer with experience in both Higher Education and the Environmental Sector

How I looked for work

I first started working in the Alumni Office after applying for a data entry position on UniJobs. After several months of working there part time whilst also looking for a job in the Environment Sector, a permanent Database Assistant role was created and I decided to apply.

My career history

After graduating I spent a year working as volunteer warden with the National Trust. I then moved back to York where I began working in the Alumni Office whilst also volunteering with the North East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre. This eventually led to me getting a job as the Biological Records Officer with the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union which I was able to do alongside my current role in the Alumni Office. However, after starting a family I didn't want to work full time and so I decided to focus fully on my role within the University.

Courses taken since graduation

MSc in Ecology at Aberdeen University

Contacting me

I'm happy to mentor students with a background in Environmental Sciences or anyone who is interested in working with databases and CRMs.

I'm also happy to answer questions on:

Records management and Database jobs
Working in Higher Education
Looking for work in the Environmental Sector

What I do

I help with the administration and maintenance of the University's alumni and friends database, and provide support and training for other database users throughout the University.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I did a lot of data analysis and statistics as part of my undergraduate degree, and this has proved really useful for creating reports and summaries of alumni data. However, other skills, such as data manipulation and data cleaning I have learnt on the job.
