A day in the life of a Cyber Security Consultant in the United Kingdom
I have a Chemistry background and now work as a Cyber Security consultant for a big 4 firm.
My career history
I undertook an industrial placement year at Unilever as part of my masters degree. I continued to work there as a formulation chemist after I graduated, until I has a place on a graduate scheme at KPMG.
My advice to students considering work
University is the one place where you can involve yourself with a vast array of different societies cheaply and easily - take advantage of this! I got involved with a wide range of societies which allowed me to develop skills that I wouldn't have otherwise used. It gives you opportunities to meet people and gain experience, which is very helpful when it comes to competency based interviews.

What I do
I currently work as a Technology Consultant specialising in Cyber Security. I work with other companies who need help with their information security, be it carrying out audits or helping them to deploy better access management. The work is very varied and I work with a wide range of people.
Skills I use and how I developed them
My job is obviously very people focused as I am client facing however I also use my time management and organisational skills frequently. I developed these during my time at university by getting involved with various societies. This exposed me to a wide range of people and allowed me to gain experience organising events.
What I like most
I really enjoy working with and meeting new people which I have been exposed to in this role.
What I like least
The work can be somewhat unpredictable as you are booked onto engagements as and when you are needed.
What surprised me most
The organisational structure is very flat, with people of varying seniority being treated in a broadly similar way.
