A day in the life of a Energy Manager in the United Kingdom

Energy Professional in leisure sector

How I looked for work

I applied to graduate schemes but many were not inclusive of environmental students, so I picked a context in which I was interested, which was buildings/facilities management and started my internet searches on local organisations and companies.

How I found out about the job

Speculative application

The recruitment process

I explained my skill set to Flamingo Land and it fit their aims to reduce energy consumption and spend.

My career goals when I graduated

To do environmental consultancy, EIA's etc, preferably with an energy focus.

My career history

North Yorkshire County Council - Energy Assessor - 2008 - 2014
City of York Council - Investment & Data Officer - 2014 - Present
Flamingo Land Resort - Energy Manager - 2014 - Present

What has helped my career to progress

Lots of extra curricular learning and applying environmental knowledge to different contexts. I have championed environmental issues in many roles: school governor, district councillor and non-profit organisation director.

Courses taken since graduation

Diplomas in Non Domestic, Domestic and Green Deal Energy Assessment
Lead Assessor Training
Health & Safety training Including Asbestos and Legionella

How my studies have helped my career

Having a broad knowledge of the context of your role in an organisation is always important, a good motivator, and can give you a unique perspective. Energy Efficiency is a key component in meeting carbon targets, reducing the impacts of climate change and delivering efficient business.

What surprised me about my career so far

When I surveyed York Minster I didn't expect to end up surveying a zoo and theme park!

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to be celebrating a good amount of energy savings and maybe the start of my own consultancy.

My advice to students considering work

Volunteer where you can, your study is useful to someone, a community group, a school, a charity. This also gives you demonstrable skills to use in interviews and is generally just a nice thing to do.

My advice about working in my industry

Look for opportunities, energy managers are not just found in industrial contexts, they are working in buildings, leisure, transport, infrastructure and in large or small organisations.

Other advice

Keep a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) file. Mine is a spreadsheet detailing all of the training and learning i've done so far in my career. This was essential for becoming a Member of the Energy Institute and Energy Managers Association.

What I do

Energy Manager in a holiday resort, zoo and theme park. I try to save the park energy, money and carbon.

Skills I use and how I developed them

After doing an energy assessment of York Mister for my dissertation, I started training to survey commercial buildings to produce Display Energy Certificates (DEC's), then domestic buildings (EPC's) through the Green Deal and then trained to be a lead assessor for the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), every time building on my existing knowledge.

What I like most

Getting out of the office, surveying assets and learning how they work and operate.

What I like least

People leaving the lights on!

What surprised me most

The energy and passion of staff and visitors towards environmental issues.
