A day in the life of a Senior Heritage Adviser in the United Kingdom
Senior heritage consultant providing conservation and design advice to clients working with the historic built environment
My career goals when I graduated
To build a career in the heritage sector.
My career history
Having finished my BA at York in 2004, I worked first as a research assistant to the Chief Executive of Historic England and then as a researcher for the new Visitor Centre at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Both appointments allowed me to use the skills I had learnt at York and contribute to lectures, publications and an exhibition.
I returned to York to complete a Masters followed by a collaborative PhD focussing on the development of the Harewood Estate in West Yorkshire. Though specific to a particular subject, the experience of completing a PhD provided a number of transferable skills including project management, communication and the ability to write in a clear and concise way.
All of these experiences and skills are essential for my current role as a heritage consultant working for Montagu Evans LLP, a surveying practice established in 1921.
As part of the Town Planning department I provide conservation and design advice to clients working with the historic built environment. Projects regularly involve works to listed buildings, development in Conservation Areas and schemes in the setting of other heritage assets. My research background in architectural and landscape history has therefore been crucial in providing a knowledge base from which to draw upon in discussions with clients, local planning authorities and Historic England.
