My career goals when I graduated
To work in a digital specialist role within a heritage organisation
My career history
Archives Trainee with The National Archives on the Transforming Archives Programme, specialising in digitisation and outreach. Prior: paid retail work whilst undertaking volunteering with local heritage organisations such as York Museums Trust and Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past.
What has helped my career to progress
My MSc in Digital Heritage- my IT skills are more relevant now to heritage organisations as we progress further into the digital age, eg Archives receiving more digital deposits. Also an enthusiasm for sharing heritage with others.
Courses taken since graduation
Long distance learning 10 Credit Module in Digital Preservation. Also planning on submitting application for PGDip in Archives & Records Management to progress into an Archivist role
What surprised me about my career so far
How working in Archives combines knowledge gained from both of my York degrees- including my BA in History of Art and my MSc in Digital Heritage. It's a highly multi-disciplinary career.
My advice to students considering work
All work is good experience- I worked in retail for the five years during uni and undertook volunteering before I was employed in a paid heritage job.
My advice about working in my industry
Volunteer as much as you can, employers in the heritage industry prefer work experience over grades!
What I do
Cataloguing and processing of archive collections, from medieval manuscripts to digital files, to enable public access and ensure the long-time preservation of the document. Also assisting the researchers with the archive material.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Use of database management systems, spreadsheets, management of data combined with historical knowledge, advising researchers about collections. My MSc provided me with the base practical skills for the IT work, which is now being put into practice in my current role. My BA in History of Art (and Architecture), studied at York, increased my enthusiasm for heritage, and also an in-depth knowledge of the historical periods- very relevant to archives!
What I like most
Being able to combine all skills and knowledge gained from my BA History of Art (York) and MSc Digital Heritage (York) into the role
