Moving forward to a North American PhD program
Why I continued studying
To further my career goals.
What my course is like
A long program (approximately 7 years), with a mix of academic and pre-professional training.
How I have funded my studies
I received 5 years of funding as part of my post-graduate study contract. Usually one year is funded by a fellowship and the other four require work as a teaching or research assistant. I was lucky and received fellowships for 4 of the 5 years. I will fund my final 2-3 years of dissertation work with grants, fellowships, or a job.
My advice to students considering further study
Think hard about how it will or will not contribute to your goals, and if possible, take time off beforehand. Working a non-academic job for a while, even if it's only a few months, will give you more perspective and may help keep you from burning out academically.
