A day in the life of a Project Manager in the United Kingdom
Project manager with a history in heritage
My career goals when I graduated
Work in the heritage sector
My career history
The heritage sector proved too difficult to work in due to significant cuts after the 2009 recession (when I graduated!). I moved into project management instead through temporary contracts in a variety of sectors until landing a permanent Project Manager role in the rail sector
What has helped my career to progress
Lots of job applications!
Courses taken since graduation
PRINCE2, ILM Level 3 in Leadership and Management, ECDL
How my studies have helped my career
You need a PRINCE2 really to progress in the sector
What surprised me about my career so far
Everytime I get a job!
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Continue to be a Project Manager perhaps in a bigger company
My advice to students considering work
Keep your mind open to working in different jobs/sectors and maybe working your way into your preferred career at a later date
My advice about working in my industry
Get experience in development roles such as Project Support Officer/Project Officer/Project Admin etc.
What I do
Project Manager
Skills I use and how I developed them
Planning, decision making, problem solving and leadership. I developed these through a variety of short contracts in different sectors including HE, IT, heritage and Community Development in order to build my confidence and experience.
What I like most
Every day is different, there's a lot of decision making and power over your own projects
What I like least
No project ever seems to be straightforward and sometimes you have to make snap decisions.
What surprised me most
The variety of sectors you can work in
