A day in the life of a Business Analyst in the United Kingdom

International business analyst for Cerillion Technologies

How I looked for work

I used online job recruitment websites and I asked people I knew for recommendations.

How I found out about the job

Already worked there

The recruitment process

There was a technical interview based on the skills on my CV.

My career goals when I graduated

Get a job within the archaeology sector.

My career history

I started as a junior computer programmer and tester. I progressed up the career ladder through work experience and hard work.

What has helped my career to progress

Hard work and being flexible on hours and travel.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Senior Business Analyst, then Project Manager.

My advice to students considering work

Learn how to listen and improve time management skills. People at my company who use the internet all day or constantly miss deadlines are thought very badly of. You get out what you put in. Sounds boring but hard work does pay off and the skills you learn at York will help in your chosen career, no matter what that is. My degree in Archaeology helped with my career in IT.

My advice about working in my industry

Get a good degree. We normally throw away any CV's that aren't 2:1 or above. Sad but true.

Other advice

I work very hard but I am rewarded with a good salary and sense of work satisfaction. I also play hard and love running, biking and time away with my friends and family. It shouldn't all be about work. Have a good balance.

Contacting me

Happy to answer questions on my degree and job history.

What I do

Business Analyst in the IT sector.
Sent onsite to the Caribbean, Florida, Jersey, Cambodia and all over the UK.
Requirements gathering, software design, onsite support and delivering training in house and at client site.

Skills I use and how I developed them

My degree at York helped me move from a much lower job within my current company to a much higher position with more money and responsibility.

Degree skills:
Presentation skills, time management and learning to critically analyse requirements definitely helped progress my career within my current company.

Extracurricular skills:
I play a lot of sport and have found this has helped calm me and has taught me about the importance of team work.

What I like most

Good annual wage, constantly learning new skills and lots of travel.

What I like least

Can be quite stressful and I have to make some important decisions on my own.

What surprised me most

A logical brain, being prepared to travel and quick thinking are required for a job as a Business Analyst.
