A day in the life of a Engagement and Learning Officer in the United Kingdom

Learning and engagement for juniors at the National Museum of the Royal Navy

How I looked for work

I used websites like the Museums Association and the Museum of Leicesters job desk.

How I found out about the job

Other graduate recruitment website

The recruitment process

Job application followed by an interview and probationary period.

My career goals when I graduated

To work in a museum.

My career history

My first job was an Education Officer at the Cambridge and County Folk Museum. Then I moved to be the Learning Development Officer at HMS Victory and since then I have been in the learning department of the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

What has helped my career to progress

The most important thing was doing lots of voluntary work and of course getting a professional, accredited museum qualification has been so valuable. I have also had to be flexible and willing to move anywhere in the country as it can be hard to find jobs.

Courses taken since graduation

MA in Museology at the University of East Anglia

How my studies have helped my career

I learnt vital skills needed to work in and understand museums and allowed me to apply for a greater range of jobs.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Still working in museums and helping people learn about history!

My advice to students considering work

Do voluntary work in the field you are interested in!

Contacting me

If you are interested in working in museums I would be happy to offer advice!

What I do

Provide learning opportunities to babies, toddlers, children, schools and adults and help them discover more about the history and legacy of the Royal Navy

Skills I use and how I developed them

I learnt about working in museums by doing a Museology MA and lots of voluntary work! I need to be good at communicating. Flexible and creative! I also need to enjoy and be confident in explaining the historical stories to lots of different people!

What I like most

Building up relationships with our visitors and seeing their enjoyment is brilliant. It's also very varied so you never get bored!

What I like least

It can be very busy and stressful trying to get everything as good as it can possibly be!
