A day in the life of a Historic building researcher in Taiwan
International student working within historical heritage in Taiwan
My career history
Graduated with a B.Sc. in biology in Singapore, my first job began as a Project officer where I have the opportunity to work for a monument-gazetted Chinese Buddhist monastery, mainly to carry out the coordination the restoration work within the Monastery complex. Upon graduation from the MA course in UK, I was employed by my country's Preservation of Monuments Board as a monument officer. Later, I moved on to Taiwan to take on an active role in the conservation of historic buildings, and finally entered into a doctoral course in Architecture at the National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan).
How my studies have helped my career
As most of the conditions of the historic buildings were in pretty bad shape, the MA course broaden my perspectives and deepen my sensitivity when working on those buildings. It also inspired me to take up a doctoral degree in Taiwan to further develop my interest in the study of the structural performance of traditional timber structures.
What surprised me about my career so far
The multi-disciplinary path that I took during the course.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
To work towards a researcher or assistant professor position.
My advice to students considering work
Do not feel bounded by the course discipline that you took, sometimes, the experience you got from studies or work will bring you to some unexpected paths.
My advice about working in my industry
Stay open-minded and multi-disciplinary.
What I do
The preliminary investigation & research works of historic buildings
Skills I use and how I developed them
To apply and improvise the various material conservation skills and investigation methods onto the job.
What I like most
The intimate relationship with the historic buildings of various shapes and styles
What I like least
As most of the historic buildings that we handled were usually of ruined or poor condition, so the overall environment was, at times, not too pleasant for the faint-hearted.
