A day in the life of a Senior Researcher in the United Kingdom

Learn the skills needed in fast growing sectors where there is a shortage of skilled workers!

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Localis is an independent, leading not-for-profit think tank, that works to promote neo-localist ideas through research, events and commentary. Neo-localism is about giving places and people more control over the effects of globalisation.

What do you do?

I am a Senior Researcher at Localis responsible for conducting qualitative and quantitative research and analysis. Working as part of the team, I oversee research from inception to completion including putting forward policy recommendations. Additionally, I work to promote research through social media and across a wide variety of events including policy roundtables, panel discussions and more recently online webinars.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I have always been interested and involved in politics and related sectors- before joining Localis I was working in the human rights sector first in Brussels and later on in Paris.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I did not know what I would do after I graduated so this is a difficult question to answer!

Describe your most memorable day at work

Going to Downing Street shortly before the 2019 general election!

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Of course, every job comes with a variety of challenges.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Very encouraging and open for individuals to take the lead. Since COVID-19 we have adopted a hybrid model of working part time from the office and part time from home.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was part of the annual Hitch organised by LCD International - going to Croatia in Easter break of first year. I also ran the York branch for the two years after!

Apart from this I was involved with York UNA and a whole load of different societies!

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Learn the skills needed in fast growing sectors where there is a shortage of skilled workers!

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything and everything - happy to speak with people about any question they may have!
