A day in the life of a Stage Manager in Italy

I was Stage Manager for my third year show, and I immediately fell in love with the role to the point that I decided to pursue it as a career.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Teatro Regio di Parma

What do you do?

I assist and support the Stage Management team in running rehearsals and performances; I organise and manage shows, concerts and events by guest companies hosted by the theatre; I assist the Production team in the redaction, checking and preparation of documents (daily activities schedule, production schedule, artists' dressing room assignments, audition material, etc.).

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I tried out for the first time the role of Stage Manager for my third year show, and I immediately fell in love with the role to the point that I decided to pursue it as a career.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

A little bit as I thought I would become a performer.

Describe your most memorable day at work

7th December 2023, the day in which I achieved my dream of being part of the Stage Management team of the opera opening Teatro alla Scala season.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Definitely working long hours, having no free weekends and working and thinking constantly under stress and pressure.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Every day is different from the other; sometimes I work in the backstage of a busy opera full of tech and people, sometimes I sit at my desk filling paperwork, redacting calendars and answering emails for future projects, sometimes I sit at home with a cup of tea filling and checking my score for an upcoming performance.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was Events Coordinator for the Latin-American Society: it really helped me to develop project management skills, leadership and team-work.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I'd like to keep growing as a Stage Manager and work for important and successful companies and theatres all over the world.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Try out as many hobbies and activities as possible, take every opportunity that is offered to you and don't be afraid to change and adjust your career path and reinvent yourself, I promise you that each experience is valuable, can teach you something, and it will eventually lead you to find your perfect spot in the job market.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Any topic, feel free to ask whatever you want.
