A day in the life of a Principal Clinical Psychologist in the United Kingdom

Challenges - the criminal justice system, ethical dilemmas and working with others outside healthcare

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

The Trust is a large health care provider in north London covering 5 boroughs and I work in the specialist services as the lead psychologist at the Stalking Threat Assessment Centre and the CTCCFS services

What do you do?

I lead a team and provide assessments, treatment and consultation to stalking cases across London. I advise practitioners in the capital and across the country and have written a book on treatment. I also provide expertise in risk assessment and management of offenders.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I have prioritised what is interesting and challenging and contexts that challenge my clinical skill and thinking.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes, I never thought I would be working in such a niche service which is leading practice.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I can’t really talk about that due to various reasons but overall it involved a lot of co- working, managing risk and supporting a outcome that meant people were safer at the end.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Lots, the criminal justice system, ethical dilemmas and working with others outside of health care

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Inclusive, pro-active and reflective

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Underwater hockey and college sports rep

What would you like to do next with your career?

Keep learning and building our service

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Be curious, seek out any opportunity but also don’t put to much pressure on yourself - paths take a while at times and that’s fine.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Any: what work is like? How to get on the clinical training or just anything that might feel helpful.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Be interested and curious, it gets you a long way
