Tom is a research technician at SEI York. He co-ordinates ecological monitoring across the Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland for the Peatland-ES-UK project and has recently started working on the IDEAL UK FIRE project, which spans the Scottish borders, North York Moors, Peak District and the New Forest national parks. Tom’s work at SEI focuses on linking plant and soil carbon dynamics to land management and climate change.
Peatland-ES-UK is a long-term monitoring project, which assesses vegetation management impacts in UK upland heather-dominated peatlands in relation to biodiversity, water quality and carbon dynamics (carbon dioxide and methane). This work includes seasonal chamber carbon and greenhouse gas flux measurements, water quality monitoring and ecological surveys.
Tom holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of York. He used a cross-disciplinary approach to study coastal storms in the UK, exploring both environmental records of storm events and how these storms can affect the psychological benefits which we derive from the coast.
