Under SEI’s ‘Managing environmental systems’ theme, and as part of our Regional Air Pollution in Developing Countries (RAPIDC) programme, we have developed a tool to help developing countries prepare air pollutant emission inventories. This tool comprises a manual and Excel-spreadsheet based workbook which together provide a simplified and user-friendly framework compatible with other major international emission inventory initiatives (e.g. IPCC and EMEP/Corinair).
SEI’s approach to emission inventory development is detailed in the Global Atmospheric Pollution Forum’s Air Pollutant Emissions Inventory Preparation Manual.
Capacity building has taken the form of a series of training workshops which has resulted in the compilation of inventories by the Malé Declaration countries of South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka) and the APINA (Air Pollution Information Network Africa) countries of southern Africa (Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe). In most cases, these are the first national air pollutant inventories ever produced by these countries.
There is now growing interest in applying SEI’s emission inventory capacity building approach to other developing country regions such as East Asia (including China) and at both national and urban scales.
