Human Rights Day 2021

Every year on 10 December, the world celebrates Human Rights Day. This is the anniversary of the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

The Declaration proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was drafted by representatives of all regions and legal traditions and has become accepted as a contract between Governments and their peoples. Virtually all States have accepted the Declaration and it has served as the foundation for an expanding system of human rights protection.

This year’s Human Rights Day theme relates to equality and Article 1 of the UDHR: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
