Student profiles

At York, we have a huge range of students studying many different subjects.

They have been refining their preferred revision techniques and study skills throughout their education, helping them to learn in a way that suits them best. Here’s what they have to say:

When studying I find it really useful to write a to do list at the beginning of the day. This way I can track what I've done and what needs prioritising! And my revision snack - a cup of tea and gingernut biscuits!

Olivia, second-year English Language and Linguistics student

Taking breaks is essential! Going for a short walk is nice and helps you feel refreshed after a hard study session. And my study snack… anything dipped in hummus!

Mariama, fourth-year Business and Management (with a year in Industry) student

Plan your day the night before. Planning is the key to effective time management. It's hard to feel organised and on top of things if you are unprepared. Having a clear plan for your day helps you make the most of your time. Especially when it comes to revision!

Somir, second-year Human Geography and Environment student

Build the amount you do up by half an hour each day or week to get yourself used to working for longer periods of time. My go-to revision snack is vegan brownie (from Vedge, when I’m on campus!).

Charlotte, first-year Sociology and Criminology student

It's really difficult to do effective revision for hours on end, so make sure you take regular breaks, such as having a walk, to refresh your mind. I have so many favourite study snacks! If I had to pick, I'd say custard creams (with a big mug of tea, obviously!).

Peter, second-year archaeology student

If you don't understand the way your teacher explains something, find YouTube videos that explain the subject. You may find that they explain topics in a different way that makes much more sense. Plus, remain calm and believe in yourself! Try your very best and you can be content with your effort. I treat myself to one fruit twist after I have completed revision of one topic.

Etleva, first-year Chemistry student

Find a workplace that suits you, one that has no distractions and enough space for you to do your work. Make it work for you, and that will make revising and working that tiny bit easier.

Chloe, second-year English and Related Literature student
